European interpretations of Chinese and East Asian culture during the 17th and 18th century was known as Chinoiserie, although the style was more often associated with fantasy and invention than historical accuracy.

Chinoiserie, from the French word “chinois” is often associated with exuberance and wealth which one could argue has no place at a time like this, however in anxious times I turn to art or learning to escape. It turns out doing this blog on Chinoiserie ticked both these boxes. I hope the combination of different cultures and styles, to create something beautiful, inspires you as much as it does me.

Award-winning stand at Decorex 2019 JHB

When Theo Bothma from TBAD Architects and design was approached by Luxury Living and Maxfine to collaborate and design a stand for Decorex JHB 2019, he believed that instead of a straight forward collaboration and entirely new and exciting concept brand could be created. The concept of Xperience luXury was born, and the concept was to show an entire living space, including a kitchen, living area functional modern wardrobe and a bathroom. Many homes are getting smaller, and this showcase had to appeal to a broad spectrum of consumers, particularly those that appreciate luxury and finer living.

Your home is your sanctuary – it sets the mood we begin the day with and the tone of the welcome we return too. Our lives are busy and so driven by technology on a daily basis and this changes the way we think and feel. Our identities are constantly shifting and evolving and its sometimes difficult to keep track of who we are and what we like. Our home is different – this is the place we can be ourselves and re-centre ourselves. Colour reflects the things that bring us happiness. So when it comes to designing your own personal space colour can be a defining and expressive element. Building confidence in colour begins by painting a small space and experiencing the aesthetic and ambience created. The colours for 2020 are inspired by nature and our desire to reconnect with nature on a constant basis. There is no doubt that botanical colours will be the favourite for the seasons to come.

Menorca Experimental Hotel in Spain

On the island of Menorca, as yet unscathed by an overrun of tourists, the Experimental Group have opened their latest outpost. The Menorca Experimental Hotel sits on 30 hectares of green, tranquil land, within a revamped 19th century ‘finca’, or agricultural estate. The whitewashed compound was carefully restored by a team of local craftsmen, under the guidance of French interior designer Dorothee Meilichzon.
